1963 Derelict Deluxe 23 Window Split Screen Camper
Discovered in Los Angeles on a Type 2 Detectives road trip in October 2015, this ’63 Split Screen was a bus that we could not pass on.
Before being shipped to the UK the additional 8 windows and a sunroof were expertly fabricated in by Grumpy’s Metal, once back in the UK the additional side and corner windows were carefully fabricated into the body, importantly, none of these processes lost any of the original patina.
The chassis was fully stripped down and media blasted replacing the floor and any other areas that needed attention. Once complete the full underside of the body was Raptor coated to give a strong and protective layer.
All the running gear, suspension, brakes and electrics have been stripped, reconditioned or replaced with new items.
The modification and upgrades are typical Type 2 Detectives with a tried and tested approach to improving the driving experience of Split Screen buses, this ’63 now wants for nothing. The bus now runs the optimum set up with a detailed 1500, single port engine, straight axle conversion, narrowed front beam uprated suspension with Bilstein shocks, Porsche front brakes and detailed Porsche Fuchs replica wheels.
The Split screen is complimented with a bespoke interior, with grained and perforated leather and a wool headlining. The front seat is a “flip” seat allowing for the passenger compartment to be converted into a more spacious seating area, along with a rock and roll rear seat. All the trim is unique to this bus including stunning aluminium seat backs with and a kick board complimented with copper rivets.
