Built by the highly respected VW specialist, Luke Theochari of Terry’s Beetle Services, this stunning 1953 sunroof Oval was put together for a customer who wanted to build his perfect Beetle. The starting point was a highly desirable car in its own right, a ragtop equipped Oval. Luke carried out all of the necessary metalwork repairs it needed and fitted a reproduction Oval Cabriolet decklid to help cool the monster engine that was to come. He then painted the car black, which is the most unforgiving of colours. Although you can see for yourself that the amount of prep work that went into this car resulted in a truly fabulous finish.
The intention was always to build a proper, Cal Looker and to achieve this, parts were tracked down and bought from all over the world. No Cal Looker worth its salt would have a weedy engine and this one sports an impressive 185bhp John Maher Racing 2276cc with dual Dellorto carbs. It puts the power down via a 5-speed gearbox using a Gene Berg kit and was put together by Cog Box.
The 150mph speedo isn’t just there for decoration, this is a Beetle you can cruise all day on the motorway in at 70mph and more…
The interior also sports a host of Cal Look accessories. Such as the Gene Berg shifter, Motometer Rally Dash Pack with Auto Meter Sport Comp gauges and a repro Dehne fuel gauge.
It might be built for speed, but the interior is trimmed for comfort. The front seats are by Race Trim and are the road-going versions of Beard racing seats. Like the rest of the interior, they’ve been upholstered in half-leather, half-cloth by Bernard Newbury with a ‘Fat Biscuit’ design. He also installed a West of England cloth headliner and sunroof cover.
If you’re looking for old-school looks but something that will literally blow the cobwebs and boy racers away, you couldn’t ask for more.
