When this 23-window Split was featured in VolksWorld magazine, they described it as “The best Bus ever” and “Possibly the finest custom Samba in the world.” That’s a bold claim, but one that’s easily backed up when you cast an eye over this truly stunning machine.
Originally built in 1959, it was restored, and then on the cover of VolksWorld in 2007. Since then it’s been meticulously maintained and is as fresh now as they day it was built. Which is testament to the quality of workmanship that went into it.
Right-hand drive 23-window Deluxes don’t exactly grow on trees, and this super desirable model was in a bad way when it was brought into the country.
No stone was left unturned in the restoration process and six months were invested in the rust repair and prep to get it ready for paint. Any flaws would immediately show up in the Harvest Moon Beige and Texas Brown paint and the bodywork here is arrow straight.
The previous owner was just as meticulous when it came to the running gear. Rather than buy anything off the peg, he custom-built everything to his own exacting standards. He designed his own 4.5-inch narrowed front beam, devised his own disc brakes utilizing Boxster four-pot callipers and a 944 master cylinder and then built a 2332cc engine to enjoy cruising at modern speeds.
Inside, you’ll find a modern take on the classic Devon camping interior, with fat biscuit tweed upholstery and German square weave carpets throughout. Plus, a whole host of cool accessories and a huge stereo system.
