Deus Ex Machina is Latin for ‘god from the machine’ and this car is the result of a collaboration between ourselves, the Deus emporium in Venice, California, Romance with Rust and Fifteen52, who supplied the Outlaw wheels initially fitted to the car.
We travelled out to the US and built the car with help from Romance with Rust for Deus’s open day, before shipping it back to the UK and swapping the wheels and running gear to what you see now.
The car itself is a 1969 Squareback that was bought from ISP West in California. It was a good, solid base upon which to build something different.
It was given a narrowed Type 1 beam, slammed and then driven all over LA by Mark and Paul, before it was packed in a shipping container and brought to the UK at the end of their travels.
Once here, it was reunited with the correct Type 3 front running gear for a more refined driving experience (Type 3s are the best driving air-cooled VWs - fact) and the wheels were changed for a set of crackle-finish Fuchs replicas. It still looks wild, but its current guise is a more user-friendly set up.
The faded factory finish gives the car great character, whilst the sign writing adds a whole other dimension of cool. (Please note: New Deus Ex Machina livery has been applied to the doors - pictures to follow)
The interior is stock brown vinyl, with a Fozzy Bear brown carpets and a perfect headlining.
If you want a car with acres of space, killer looks and a great story you really can’t go wrong with this one.
