The car:

VW were never keen on producing a sporty Beetle. To their way of thinking, the Bug was a humble car for the masses, and to keep it affordable, they kept it cheap and cheerful. That said, whenever a momentous landmark was achieved in production, VW did let their hair down a little and offered the world a special edition.

The car you’re looking at is one such a special edition - it’s a ‘World Champion’ or ‘Marathon Edition’ built to celebrate the 15,007,034 Beetle rolling off the production line.

Marathon Beetles were finished in a special colour, L96M silver/blue metallic; they also came with their own distinctive sports wheels, which were made by Lemmerz and featured hexagonal hub covers; and to really let you know you were driving something special, there was a medallion on the dash that read, “Der Weltmeister 1972, Wolfsburg, Germany’. This was all backed up with a certificate and a commemorative folder entitled, ‘History in the making.’

A little over 6000 of these editions were produced, and you’re unlikely to find a nicer example than this one outside of VW’s own museum.

It was restored by a previous owner to the highest standards and if you ignore the mileage you could be forgiven for thinking this is a new car. The paint, trim, upholstery and even the floorpans look exactly as VW intended 45 years ago.

It also sports a number of cool accessories, like a parcel tray, Blaupunkt radio, bud vase, badge bar and some very in-period Hella spotlights.

If you’re looking for a world Champion Beetle, you’re onto a sure-fire winner with this one. We doubt you’ll find better.
