1974 German Look Karmann Cabriolet

When someone takes it upon themself to modify a VW, inspiration can come from pretty much anywhere, but as a good rule of thumb, if you want to inject a dose of power and hint of aggression, but keep it classy, you look to Porsche.

This ’74 Karmann Cabriolet has certainly borrowed from the best, having been repainted in Porsche’s oh-so-Seventies shade of Blood Orange. This one started out as a US import, so the body was already solid before Luke Theochari at Terry’s Beetle Services got hold of it, but it was in need of paint and tidying, which if you know Luke, you’ll know he took in his stride.

Most Karmann Cabrilolets are left-hookers, and a lot of people can be intimidated by the thought of driving on the ‘wrong side’, so the bonus here is that this one had already been converted to right-hand drive

The body had already been detrimmed too, so Luke decided to leave it that way for a simpler, cleaner look. Running with the theme, the bumpers were colou--coded and the lights upgraded to modern LEDs front and back so you can see where you’re going and anyone following now has a fighting chance of seeing what you’re up to.

A fresh hood and murdered-out original Porsche Fuchs finish off the exterior and are a nod to the other Porsche flourishes. The black leather interior being one and the 2.3-litre engine with Porsche upright cooling and uprated gearbox being the cherry on the cake. Subtly lowered, with fresh mechanicals all round it’s a stout little package that isn’t too low to drive, which in our experience makes this an ideal summer cruiser for someone who wants something eye-catching to just jump in and enjoy the ride.
